Learn about Austin Energy Solar Plant
Tue. Nov. 30 – 7 pm at Lions Club in Manor

The public is invited to attend a meeting at 7 pm Tuesday November 30th at the Lions Club, 105 W. Eggleston in Manor to discuss a planned solar plant.
Within the next six months, Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV) plans to begin constructing one of the nation’s largest photovoltaic solar installations (30 MW), helping Austin Energy meet its target of installing 200 MW of solar capacity by 2020 and generating 35% of its power from clean, emissions-free renewable energy resources by 2020. FRV will own and operate the system; Austin Energy has contracted to purchase all of the power it produces for a 25-year period.

Austin Energy’s 2,800 acre property is located in eastern Travis County, extending from near Blake Manor Road to near FM 969. The solar farm had originally been planned for the northern portion of the site, but has been changed to the southern section of the site in order to preserve numerous existing environmental attributes, including archeological and water features present at the northern location.

Manor Veterinary Hospital is now taking applications for a full-time receptionist position. Looking for great people skills, clerical skills, and a super attitude. Will train needed veterinary knowledge. Love of animals a must. Apply at Manor Vet Hospital 11311 Hwy 290 East, Manor Texas.

Green Grass meats @ MFM

All Beef. No Surprises.

Organically raised, grass-fed beef cattle produce meat that is leaner and more flavorful than cattle raised in feed lots and fed corn and other fillers. Grass-fed beef is higher in Omega 3 fatty acids and CLA's than grain-fed beef and since it is naturally leaner there are many health benefits to replacing traditional store bought beef with naturally raised grass-fed beef.

Cattle were meant to graze the land; but somewhere along the way, cattle raisers figured out that they could fatten more cattle for less money - and in less time - if they took them off the pasture and fed them grain and other fillers. Not only does this add unnecessary fats, but it mutes the authentic flavor of the beef, leaving taste of grains and fillers.

Here at Green Grass Meats, we believe in authentic, flavorful meat. Every cut of our meat has the lean, natural taste of real beef - a taste that some folks may have never experienced in their lifetime. We make sure our cattle have plenty of space to graze and get the ample grass they need to grow.

We dry age all of our meat for two weeks, and hand select each cut for our customers.

Our philosophy is simple. Better tasting meat that is better for you. No hormones. No pesticides. No antibiotics. No bloat-inducing, genetically modified feed. Just pure, tender, delicious beef that’s been pasture raised and finished on fresh green grass, sunshine and spring water. That’s the way we do things here at Green Grass Meats. It’s a fact that Stress free cows produce beef that’s superior in taste and texture.

We encourage you to taste the difference and order your grass-fed, free range meats today.

Sincerely,

Peter Aman

Oh Honey

For you JoAnna:

Denise/JoAnna,

I prefer to leave honey on the bees after the fall honeyflow. This
usually amounts to 40-60 pounds and is sufficient to carry them through
the darth of winter till the first natural nectar is available in late
February. Last year, they were moderately successful and I fed
minimally to some of the weaker colonies. The previous year was a
disaster and it was either feed them or lose them. I use sugar off the
shelf at Wal-Mart or HEB and mix at the ratio of six pounds of sugar to
enough water to make a gallon of syrup. None of this ever reaches my
customers. The syrup is consumed by the bees several months before I
put my extracting boxes on the hives. If a colony has honey stored
through the winter, they get no supplemental syrup. The honey that
JoAnna purchased from me was my Spring Wildflower Blend. The colonies
that gathered this honey were two boxes high when I installed the third
and successive boxes in May. The combs were completely dry and most
frames had new foundation. All of this honey was primarily from nectar
gathered from Horsemint, Indian Blanket and Mesquite Blossom. If there
are further questions, call me at 272-8710 or come out for a trip to
the beeyards.

Thanks, Frank

If you have any questions let me know. Be well, Denise

syrup. We are trying to avoid all genetically modified foods and
don't want to
buy any products that support their use. Do you know if the honey that
is sold
uses any HFCS for its bees? I have heard that when bees are low on
food
reserves, beekeepers might feed them a syrup, a sugar water they mix
themselves.
So I would like to know what the bees that produce the honey sold at
Manor
Market are being fed.

thanks for any information you can provide me with

All,

Karen Banks is a graduate student at UT working on a food assessment of the Central Texas region. She is analyzing the capacity of the region to meet the food needs of its residents. To do this, she is hosting a series of roundtable discussions with farmers about the state of agriculture in Central Texas to talk about challenges farmers face to sustain a viable business and what makes agriculture in this region unique. The group will also be brainstorming ideas for how to strengthen the local food system. Jules Assata from Shades of Green Farm will facilitate the discussions.

The first roundtable will be in Elgin on September 9th from 1-3:30p. It will be at the First National Bank on 290. Attached is a flyer with more information. If you know any farmers or livestock producers in Bastrop county that would be interested in attending, please pass this information along to them.

Hope to see you there,

Stacey

Beat the Heat Market

Manor Farmers' Market
Manor New Tech High School
10323 Highway 290 East
manorfarmersmarket.org

3pm to 7pm every Saturday
year round

Can't beat the heat any better than at the Manor Farmer's Markets. At both the Wednesday and Saturday market you may park right next to the vendors booths. Hop out of your nice cool car and jump right back in. No lugging you fresh grown vegetables and meats back through the hot, hot parking lot back to your car. Easiest access markets around.

For the market this week we will have an array of locally grown summer vegetables including: EGGPLANT! zucchini and yellow squash, tomatoes, potatoes, cucumber, okra and black eyed peas. Peach preserves, blackberry jelly, fig preserves, Spaghetti sauce, tomato soup and someone had asked for SALSA last week so Sylvia is going to make some to go on the Tamales from the Mata family.

Eggs from happy healthy chickens raised in fresh air and sunshine like God intended.

Beef raised on green growing pasture grass, what their stomachs are built to digest, and with out the use of byproducts, grains, fillers, antibiotics or growth hormones.

Whole organic chickens no soy, antibiotics or growth hormones. You know why? Because when animals are raised in an environment where they have enough room, good healthy natural food, fresh air and sunlight they don't need them.

Mata Tamales: Yummy goodness. Beef, Pork, Chicken, Spicy Bean or mixed batches. Empanades for sale too.

Pat the Baker Lady will be out of town this weekend.

Today's Recipe-Manor Farmers' Market doesn't offer lamb at this point. Loncito Lamb, I believe comes from the Elgin area, you may google them or it is available at Skip and Erin's Green Gate Farm over by the Expo Center. Here at the Old Goat Ranch I have organic lamb available on the hoof. Chicken works well for this recipe simply adjust the cooking time remembering that it is cooking from both sides due to the hot skillet.

If you don't know what to have for dinner tonight ...

Nothing complements the flavor of lamb better than rosemary. And our Quick Broil method makes this dish very fast and easy to prepare. With this dish you not only enjoy great taste but add an excellent source of protein, vitamin B12, selenium, zinc, and vitamin B3 to your Healthiest Way of Eating. Enjoy!

10-Minute Rosemary Lamb Chops

Prep and Cook Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

* 12 lamb chops
* 6 TBS fresh lemon juice
* 3 TBS chopped fresh rosemary,
* 3 medium cloves garlic, pressed
* ¼ tsp salt
* ¼ tsp black pepper

I add a great big dollop of grainy Dijon type mustard to the rub. DL

Directions:

1. Press garlic and let sit for at least 5 minutes to bring out its hidden health benefits.
2. Mix together lemon juice, rosemary, pressed garlic, salt, and pepper. Rub lamb chops with mixture. Set aside on plate.
3. Preheat broiler on high heat, and place a stainless steel or cast iron skillet large enough to hold the lamb chops under the heat for about 10 minutes to get very hot (about 5-7 inches from the heat source). Be sure that the handle is also metal.
4. Once pan is hot, place lamb chops in pan, and return to broiler for about 4-5 minutes, depending on thickness of lamb. Lamb is cooked quickly as it is cooking on both sides at the same time. This is our Quick Broil cooking method.

Serves 4

Serving Suggestions: Serve with

* Pureed Navy Beans
* 5-Minute Kale

Healthy Food Tip

Is purple rice (referred to as "forbidden rice") better for you than brown rice?

I have tried to find a journal-published nutritional analysis of purple rice and have not been able to do so. All that I have been able to find is information from the Nutrient Facts panel of a purple rice package on the website of a supplier of this rice. According to that information, one-quarter cup of uncooked forbidden rice has 160 calories, 1.5 grams of fat, 34 grams of carbohydrates and 2 grams of fiber plus 0% DV for vitamin A, vitamin C, and calcium, and 4% DV for iron.

In comparison, according to the USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference (http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/), one-quarter cup of uncooked long grain brown rice has 171 calories, 1.4 grams of fat, 36 grams of carbohydrates, and 1.6 grams of fiber plus 0% DV for vitamin A and vitamin C, 1% DV for calcium, and 4% DV for iron. In terms of these Nutrition Facts panel nutrients, the two types of rice seem virtually identical. (It's also possible that the fiber contents in these two foods are even closer than four-tenths of a gram, because the purple rice manufacturer might have rounded up its fiber value to the nearest whole number.)

One difference between the two types of rice would involve the anthocyanin pigments that give purple rice its unique color. Anthocyanins are the color pigments that give many foods their deep rich red, blue, and purple colors. They are also well-studied antioxidant nutrients and are considered health supportive for this reason. The risk of several chronic health conditions, including atherosclerosis, is also lowered by regular consumption of foods containing anthocyanins. Colored rice makes sense to me as a rotating part of a Healthiest Way of Eating. Many other World's Healthiest Foods are also rich sources of these same anthocyanin antioxidants found in colored rice. Raspberries, blueberries, red grapes, eggplant, and beets would all be good examples of similarly colored (and health-supportive) foods.

Based upon all of this, I think that brown rice and purple rice (as well as other whole grain rice, such as red cargo rice) can play an important part in your Healthiest Way of Eating, and I encourage you to enjoy a variety of colored rice. The only reason that I chose brown rice as a featured World Healthiest Food and not purple or red rice was because brown rice is less expensive and more widely available. As with all World's Healthiest Foods, I encourage you to purchase certified organic rice, regardless of their color!

Joel Salatin

Joel Salatin’s latest article… http://flavormagazinevirginia.com/foodie-elitism/

“We can all do better. If we can find money for movies, ski trips, and recreational cruises, surely we can find the money to purchase integrity food. The fact is that most of us scrounge together enough pennies to fund the passion of our hearts. If we would cultivate a passion for food like the one we’ve cultivated for clothes, cars, and entertainment, perhaps we would ultimately live healthier, happier lives.”

Beef returns to the market

Go to our website and have the market announcement sent to you each week.

LAVERNE'S VEGETABLE PATCH - This week I will have OKRA, CHERRY TOMATOES, PEPPERS, SALSA AND FARM FRESH EGGS.

Burt's Texas Garden: This week we'll have CORN DIP (making a double batch, but they go quick so you may want to reserve yours in advance), we'll also have DILL PICKLES, some TOMATOES, PEPPERS, OKRA, and quite a few bags of FRESH BASIL. Come see us!

Bikkurim Farms will bring organic, farm raised whole chickens and eggs, homemade spaghetti sauce, tomato sauce, hot sauce and tomato soup. From the gardens squash, tomatoes, okra, cucumbers, unshelled black eyed peas, watermelon & just dug potatoes.

Munkebo Farm will have just dug red potatoes, Yukon gold potatoes, cucumbers, carrots, magenta spreen (like spinach), yellow squash, butternut squash, patty pan squash, lemon basil, sweet basil, grape-fig preserves, duck eggs, organic apple pie, balsamic vinaigrette and artichoke dip.

I've just got to say something about these new potatoes again. I'm changing the description to “JUST DUG POTATOES”. In just dug potatoes the sugars haven't had time to turn into starch. The flesh is smooth, creamy and sweet from the sugar. They take less time to cook. True “new” potatoes, not the ones in the grocery store they call new potatoes, have very, very thin skins. You can almost rub it off with your finger. As potatoes age their skins thicken, sugar turns to starch and texture becomes grainy. I'm just saying.

Gordon Taylor has for the market this week: Cantaloupe, small sweet okra, hot or sweet peppers, tomatoes, cashaw, butternut, & spaghetti squash. From the jelly cabinet Gordon has made home fig preserves, plum jam, peach jelly & pickled beets. Gordon may not make it today as he has been sick.

BEEF, IT'S WHAT'S FOR DINNER

Green Grass Meats has joined the Manor Farmers' market family and will be attending both the Wednesday market downtown and the Saturday market at New Tech High School. David will be bringing us antibiotic and growth hormone free beef from their fields right here in Central Texas including two pastures in Manor. Steaks, ground beef, roasts, jerky and beer sticks. For more information on their practices go to Green Grass Meats dot com.

Pat is going to be bringing baked goods today. I'm not sure what all she is bringing but she named pies, cakes, & cookies.

Mata Tamales will be at the market with tamales made by three generations of the Mata family here in Manor. Francesca will have empanadas. They will have peaches off the trees in their yard that are juicy and taste like a peach. What a concept.

Ray the Noodle Man will have homemade Texas Wendish Heritage Society noodles for sale. Just like his Momma used to make using only flour, eggs and salt.

Bloor House handcrafted necessities has lovely things for the entire family, Texas Beer Soap, Shea Butter Body Cremes, All Natural Laundry Soap that's great for sensitive skin as well as HE washers, All Natural Insect Repellents, Healing Lip Balms, and more!

Cotton Candy Kidz will be starting the Manor Markets this week. Hnad made bow holders, tutus, fabric covered baby cloth cases and hand painted plaques for nursery wall decorations. Perfett (o) for baby shower gifts.

The Goodwin Homestead will have stained glass mosaic garden stones , mosaic coasters , mosaic pottery and one of a kind hand felted bags!

The old Environmental Mills on Highway 290 just east of Old Kimbro Road is under new ownership.  They are offering free mulch for the taking.  There is a sign on the south side of 290 that says "Free Mulch" just before their drive way. Pull in and look to your right there is a big box of mulch.  Load it up and take it home.  They are burning the scrap wood down there and it smells like BBQ all the time at my house.

Saturday Afternoon Market

Good Morning,

Th announcement didn't go through yesterday so I'm trying again this morning. Dang internet.

For the market this week we have lots and lots of watermelon and cantaloupe for the fourth of July festivities. Many different varieties of peppers large and small, sweet or hot , in a wide array of colors. There are still plenty of tomatoes, cucumbers and potatoes for salads. Okra is coming in really well now with the heat. We have a great deal of squash, yellow straight or crook neck, zucchini, Lebanese, white scallop, patty pan, acorn, butternut, spaghetti and cashaw. All of them are great on the grill.

Last night we cut the yellow squash length wise, brushed brushed w/ olive oil, sprinlked kosher salt and fresh ground black pepper and put them on the grill. Fast, easy and delicious.

Also, we made stuffed jalapenos. We used a package of cream cheese, three stripes of lime zest chopped fine, the juice of half a lime and a small handful of chopped fresh cilantro. Mix and set aside. Cut jalapenos in half and clean out membrane and seeds. Fill cavity with cream cheese mixture. Put a shrimp on top and wrap the whole thing in half a slice of bacon. Secure with toothpick. Grill cut side down until bacon is crispy. Turn gently with tongs, don't squeeze or the cheese oozes out and grill til bacon is crispy on the bottom.

Sliced tomatoes with basil, olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Watermelon, cantaloupe and fried catfish from a friend. Simple, local, tasty meal. In-laws are visiting from Nevada couldn't say enough about how good it all was.

Every Saturday, rain or shine, from 3PM to 7PM at the new Tech High School parking lot on Highway 290.

Eat well,

Food of the Week . . . Corn
Did you know that a one cup serving of sweet yellow corn contains 356 IU or 7% of your daily value for vitamin A and 108 mcg of beta-carotene, neither of which are found in white corn? Along with vitamin A and beta-carotene, yellow corn contains other carotenoid phytonutrients, such as beta-cryptoxanthin, lutein and zeaxanthin, which act as powerful antioxidants to help combat harmful free radical activity and prevent various degenerative diseases. A serving of corn also provides 18% of the daily value for fiber. Diets high in fiber-rich foods like corn have been shown to lower high cholesterol levels, reduce the risk of colon cancer, and alleviate some of the uncomfortable symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. And since corn is also tasty and fun to eat, it is a great addition to your Healthier Way of Eating—especially for those summer BBQs and picnics! Read More ...
