Market Offerings for April 21

Burt's Texas Garden: This week we will have Strawberry Spread, Jalapeno Jelly, Cabernet Wine Jelly, Bread and Butter Pickles, Chow-Chow, Pickled Beets, and Farm Fresh Eggs. We'll also be bringing along some Yellow Squash and Zucchini starter plants.

Laverne's Vegetable Patch: This week I will have salsa - farm fresh eggs - tomato plants - and brownies.

Munkebo Farm: cabbage, brocolli, green onions, kale, chard, spinach, oregano, parsley and lambs quarters. Balsamic or ranch dressing, walnut pesto and hummus. Apple or berry pie. Frozen Muskovi Duck, duck eggs and Piedmontese beef. This beef is very, very lean. There isn't marbled, little fat and is the best beef for low fat diets.

Bloorhouse: will whip up some more of the delicious and nutritious bread she had made and brought to the market last week. Lovely soaps, lip balms & bath bombs too.

Manor Lions Club: will be selling pork raised by the Manor High School students. The students got the pigs in October and fed them a ration of show feed. The pigs were not treated with growth hormones or antibiotics. The hogs were well kept in clean, open air pens. These are not factory raised animals. The last 45-50 days the pigs were fed corn to put on weight and add flavor to the meat. Come purchase some wholesome meat for your family and support our Manor High School Ag students and the Manor Lions Club.

Mata Tamales: Three generations of the Mata family come together to make tamales for Manor. To the market they will bring chicken, pork or bean and cheese tamales. Special orders for jalapeno cheese or beef may be made in advance by calling 517-1441.

Kala's Kuisine: Kala has returned from Nepal and will be at the market offering sauces from very hot to sweet. Curry-Tabasco, Mango Chutney, Chutney Salsa, Mirchi-Masala and Curry- Chipotle Salsa. Stop by for a sample.

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!

In Celebration of the Vernal Equinox and the spring planting season Manor Farmers' Market would like to invite you to our biannual seed exchange at the market today from 4-7PM. Bring your seeds to exchange with other growers or come by and share information. Travis County Farm Bureau will bring their Mobile Learning Barn to the market this week. If there isn't room at Jennie Lane SmartPark the mobile barn will be across the street at the Manor Methodist Church. Thank you Pastor Veda and the City of Manor for making this possible.

GORDON TAYLOR, OUR NEWEST FARMER: Fresh from his fields in Cele, Gordon will bring us broccoli, collards, cabbage, spinach, kale and carrots when he can get out into the fields. Keep your fingers crossed.

For the last Wednesday market of 2009, we will have Potatoes, Turnips and Turnip Greens, Mustard Greens, Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Spinach, and Lettuce. In addition, we'll have Dill Pickles, Pickled Beets, Chow-Chow, and Jalapeno Jelly. Please note that Burt's Texas Garden will be taking a little vacation from the market during the month of January, so stop by this week to pick up your canned goods and veggies. We'll see you again in February 2010.

Any of you see the movie Fresh this weekend? Several of us Manor marketeers went to see it Saturday night in support of Edible Austin's Eat Local Week. Buy from your local family farms, know your farmers, know your food.

This week at the Market you'll find:

Burt's Texas Garden: Ahhh, Mother Nature! As expected, the hard freeze the other night wreaked havoc on our gardens. We were able to harvest the remainder of our Tatuma and Zucchini squash and Hot Peppers beforehand though. So, this will be the last week for each of those items. We still have plenty of the cold-weather-loving turnips and turnip greens, mustard greens, lettuce, broccoli, collard greens, radishes, and new for this week CABBAGE. Also, as we had to harvest all of our still-green tomatoes, we have a new batch of CHOW-CHOW made up. In addition, we'll have the usual fare of Dill Pickles, Pickled Beets, and Jalapeno Jelly.

Laverne's Vegetable Patch-This week finds the patch with homemade salsa and home grown country fresh eggs. There will also be several bouquets of flowers from the patch.

Richardson Farms has antibiotic and growth hormone free beef and pork for sale. Laverne's Vegetable Patch -This week finds the patch with a few more vegetables. Yellow squash - still doing great. The patch will also have cherry tomatoes, bell peppers, jalapeno peppers, Chinese cabbage and greens. Also available will be the homemade salsa and home grown country fresh eggs. There will also be several bouquets of flowers from the patch.

Burt's Texas Garden: It almost feels like fall this week! I do not know if you knew that I got 9 awards on my salsa's this years hot sauce contest. 5 in Austin, 2 in Houston and 2 in Alberkerky. Curry-chipotle got first place, Mirchi-masala got first place and curry tabasco got second place and mango chutney got third place on all the events. That is why I said award winning salsas.

Market Spotlight: Munkebo Farm's Legacy

Munkebo is the village in Sweden where my great grandmother was from. I recently went to Sweden for a month and found my relatives (3rd cousins). The last communication was in 1907 between my great grandfather and his brother through a letter. The saved letters dating from 1884 are how I was able to find them. They still live on the family farm in a village called Basthult. The older folks are retired from a small dairy business (18 cows) and their children and grandchildren help with the timber business. They wait 100 years from the time they plant to harvest. The older lady, Sigrid, has a loom and made her own Swedish folk dress out of flax that her mother grew and wool for the skirt and vest. She hand hammered the sterling broach that holds the purse to her skirt and also hammered the decorations for her shoes. She likes to cook and has a special talent for cookies and pastries. Some of the family belong to a hunting club that splits the take of moose and deer, which they butcher themselves.

Throughout Sweden most homes are heated with radiant heat produced from running hot water through radiators in the rooms and pipes in or under the floor. My cousins use wood chips from their woods to feed their furnace twice a day (the hopper looked like it holds a feed sack's worth of chips). I noticed no soot coming out the stack, but of course there is CO2. The houses are built with very thick walls. They all have super efficient windows and because the sills are so deep; they always have plants on them.

The people that I met in Sweden and other places in my travels have one thing in common, most are not big consumers and keep appliances long periods of time through repair and proper maintenance. They don't redecorate or change out their furniture or car every few years either. They are frugal compared to most people in America. The cities have a definite delineation between them and the countryside, no sprawl or billboards. There are no big box stores, mostly family businesses. They have an excellent train system and in the cities most walk, ride the bus or bicycle.

I know that world travel isn't green, but when you look at the educational opportunities and cultural exchange it becomes acceptable to me in moderation.
