Downtown Market Goodies for May 26

Remember to check out the new 290 Manor Farmers Market this Sat. in the New Tech High School parking lot from 3-7pm! This week at the downtown market we'll have:

Frank the Honey Man is returning to the market with his first batch of spring wild flower honey. It was a good winter for Frank's hives with 18 surviving. This honey is a little darker than last spring because there is so much horsemint this year. Horsemint aka wedding cake flower is the wildflower you see that has one long stem and separate round bunches of flowers all the way up. Colors are from white to purple. Smells like, well, mint. Once you know what it is you'll see it everywhere this year.

Burt's Texas Garden: This week, we will have Zucchini, Potatoes, Herbs, Beets, and Onions. In the canned goods department, we will have Jalapeno Jelly, Cabernet Sauvignon Wine Jelly, Chow-Chow, and Pickled Beets. No eggs this week.

Munkebo Farm will have potatoes, cabbage, tomatoes, magenta spreen (spinach family), carrots, onions, chard, oregano, cucumbers, dried herbs, Piedmontese beef, duck eggs, sesame ginger dressing, balsamic vinaigrette, hummus, artichoke dip, organic blueberry pie, cherry pie and organic apple pie

Gordon will have a whole bunch of carrots, sweet onions, lot's of potatoes, a ton of couple varieties of squash, some tomatoes and chard. Homemade pickled beets, apple butter and blackberry jam.

Ray the Noodle Man will have homemade Texas Wendish Heritage Society noodles for sale. Just like his Momma used to make.

Laverne & Bloorhouse are combined this week with yellow squash, blackberries, salsa, homemade bread & farm fresh eggs from happy healthy chickens.

Mata Tamales: Three generations of the Mata family come together to make tamales for Manor. To the market they will bring chicken, pork or bean and cheese tamales. Special orders for jalapeno cheese or beef may be made in advance by calling 517-1441.

Kala's Kuisine: will be at the market offering Mo Mos, Samosas, rice noodle salads, hummus and pesto in addition to her sauces from very hot to sweet. Curry-Tabasco, Mango Chutney, Chutney Salsa, Mirchi-Masala and Curry- Chipotle Salsa. Stop by for a sample.

Mata Tamales: Made right here in Manor by three generations of the Mata family. This week they will be bringing chicken and pork tamales and empanadas too.

Bloorhouse: will whip up some more of the delicious and nutritious bread she had made and brought to the market last week. Lovely soaps, lip balms and bath bombs too.

GORDON TAYLOR, OUR NEWEST FARMER: Fresh from his fields in Cele, Gordon will bring us broccoli, collards, cabbage, spinach, kale and carrots when he can get out into the fields. Keep your fingers crossed.

Central Texas Farm Tours Underway!

Slow Food Austin (SFA) is excited to begin offering Central Texas farm tours! Local food culture and community begins on the farm, so come with us to witness the innovation, hard work and love your neighboring Texans pour into the craft of farming! Each farm tour will include a structured talk and a purchased sample of the farm’s fare.

On Jan. 16 they toured Yonder Way Farm, an ambitious and exciting operation along the lines of Joel Salatin’s pastured salad bar beef farm. Jason Kramer raises pastured pork, beef, poultry and eggs, and is completing construction of an on-farm commercial kitchen from which he plans to serve barbecued pork, sausages and other eatables. In the best farming tradition of cooperation, Jason also offers organic produce and milk from two other neighboring farms. Yonder Way Farm is located in Brenham, an hour and 45 minutes from Austin. Laverne's Vegetable Patch: For the market this week I will have Salsa -- Eggs -- and Little Green Onions.

Edendell Farm: Our NEWEST farm joining the Manor Farmers' Market family is located 1 hour east of Austin Texas off highway 21, CR 403. "This time of year we offer “greenhouse grown” hydroponic Green Peppers which are a dark green medium size pepper with lots of flavor and nutrition. This is important distinction for the discerning shopper. The nutritional content and quality of organic produce depends upon the quality and health of the soil in which is grown. Product quality it is not just about being pesticide free. Simply having the label “organic” does not guarantee that the soil in which it is grown is adequate. Hydroponic is the technical name for plants that grow in “nutrient balanced” water systems which allow the plant to “take up” the maximum nutrient needed by the plant. That is why, in comparison to the light green look of typical green peppers (both organic and conventional) Edendell Peppers are a lush dark green. Try us! We also grow Tomatoes and will be looking forward to our first “vine ripe” harvest in late February."

Kala's Kuisine: Kala is always whipping up something new and different. I like to call it Near East/Southern fusion, her black eyed pea salad for New Years was divine. Stop by her booth for samples. Any of you see the movie Fresh this weekend? Several of us Manor marketeers went to see it Saturday night in support of Edible Austin's Eat Local Week. Buy from your local family farms, know your farmers, know your food.

This week at the Market you'll find:

Burt's Texas Garden: Ahhh, Mother Nature! As expected, the hard freeze the other night wreaked havoc on our gardens. We were able to harvest the remainder of our Tatuma and Zucchini squash and Hot Peppers beforehand though. So, this will be the last week for each of those items. We still have plenty of the cold-weather-loving turnips and turnip greens, mustard greens, lettuce, broccoli, collard greens, radishes, and new for this week CABBAGE. Also, as we had to harvest all of our still-green tomatoes, we have a new batch of CHOW-CHOW made up. In addition, we'll have the usual fare of Dill Pickles, Pickled Beets, and Jalapeno Jelly.

Laverne's Vegetable Patch-This week finds the patch with homemade salsa and home grown country fresh eggs. There will also be several bouquets of flowers from the patch.

We Give Thanks For Our Abundance

As winter sets in this holiday season, we're all hoping that we can keep eating local foods. We're thankful here in Central Texas that we can find fresh broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, winter squash, kale, peas, mustard greens, cauliflower, carrots, turnips, lettuce, spinach, leeks and more. Beyond fresh produce there's always local eggs, dairy products, honey, meats, beans, grains, jams, pickles, and other home canned or dried goods. By focusing our attention on preparing and eating these winter foods over the coming months we deepen our connection to the natural flow of the seasons and to the earth itself.

As Thanksgiving approaches, we give thanks for our abundance and for the ongoing support so many people are giving to family farmers, even in these hard economic times. In addition, we'll have Dill Pickles, Pickled Beets, Jalapeno Jelly, and Farm Fresh Eggs. Happy Thanksgiving!

Munkebo Farm: is bringing squash, green onions, mustard greens, bell peppers, hatch green chilies, lettuce, spinach, baby kale, escarole, basil, oregano, parsley, thyme, berry pie, buttermilk pie and bread.

Laverne's Vegetable Patch: will have eggs, salsa, yellow squash, bell peppers, jalapeno peppers, and lettuce.

Ray the Noodle Man: With Texas Wendish Heritage Society Noodles made the old fashioned way with eggs, flour and salt. Just like his Mom, known all over Central Texas as The Noodle Lady, started making some sixty years ago in Giddings.

Goodwin Homestead: I will be bringing stained glass mosaics for home and garden and handmade embroidered wool felted bags. I also have a few butternut squash.

Munkebo Farm will have native mustard greens, baby kale, spinach, lettuce, bell peppers, hatch green chili, hot peppers, jalapenos, green onions, garlic, basil, oregano, lemon thyme, pesto, blue cheese dressing, berry pie, buttermilk pie and bread.

Laverne's Vegetable Patch -This week finds the patch with a few more vegetables. Yellow squash - still doing great. The patch will also have cherry tomatoes, bell peppers, jalapeno peppers, Chinese cabbage and greens. Also available will be the homemade salsa and home grown country fresh eggs. There will also be several bouquets of flowers from the patch.

Burt's Texas Garden: It almost feels like fall this week! On our market table, we will have Yellow Squash, Zucchini Squash, Tatuma Squash, Turnip Greens, Turnips, Swiss Chard, Mustard Greens, Lettuce, Radishes, Broccoli, and Hot Peppers. In addition, we'll have Dill Pickles, Pickled Beets, Jalapeno Jelly, and Farm Fresh Eggs. We are sold out of Chow-Chow for the rest of the season.

Richardson Farms: All natural, humanely raised beef, pork and poultry from their family farm in Rockdale. Sausages: Italian hot or sweet, breakfast in link or pan, smoked beef or pork. Chops, ribs, steaks, cutlets, ground meats and roasts. Truly exceptional quality while supporting the local ranchers and economy.

Kala's Kuisine: I will bring all my award winning salsa's, Almondaise, hummas, cilantro chutney, curry sauce and always the samosa and momo's. These are my standard products. I do not know if you knew that I got 9 awards on my salsa's this years hot sauce contest. 5 in Austin, 2 in Houston and 2 in Alberkerky. Curry-chipotle got first place, Mirchi-masala got first place and curry tabasco got second place and mango chutney got third place on all the events. That is why I said award winning salsas.

Local Farms Provide Veggies for Thanksgiving Luncheon

The East Rural Community Center Thanksgiving Giving Luncheon will be on Fri., Nov. 13th from 11 to 2 at 600 Carrie Manor Street in Manor, TX, next to the library. Everyone is welcome. The luncheon features a savory turkey dinner with all the trimmings. Decorative placemats for the feast were made by the talented students of Anita De La Cruz at Manor's Decker Middle School. This year we are excited to be serving vegetables grown right here from Burt's Texas Garden and Hands of the Earth Farm! Many thanks to all of the volunteers and contributors who make this special community event possible.
